The only ones I knew without looking were Anita Bryant, George Wallace, Euell Gibbons, Timothy Leary, and Sylvester! I guess I'm not as well-read as I thought....

Anita Bryant spoke one Sunday at the church we attended in south Florida (she was married to Bob Green and lived in Boynton Beach). When Timothy Leary was holding forth in Millbrook, NY, we lived a few miles down the road from him in Poughkeepsie (my early IBM days).

Muhamed Ali was justified and absolutely correct in his statement, (of FACT).

You've dug up some occult quotes here, Snowy.

(Who said that? 'Twas I of course)

They said so many good things that it was hard to pick one out.

“Anita Bryant spoke one Sunday at the church we attended in south Florida“

Anita Bryant ended up bankrupt after she started pounding on gays, and divorced her husband (who denied that they were divorced under Biblical law) because gays boycotted her music and the products she sponsored, and church’s stopped inviting her to speak because of the divorce. The quote I remember best by her is that she had rather her son be dead than homosexual, but I couldn’t find it. Her son grew up to be a liberal with gay friends, wouldn’t you know. When a person perceives their parents as fanatics, they often go in the opposite direction, especially if their parents are ostracized for their actions.

“When Timothy Leary was holding forth in Millbrook, NY, we lived a few miles down the road.”

You’ll be impressed to know that I got closer to him than you because I heard him speak in Portland, Oregon. My impression is that he was a terrible person who caused a great deal of suffering and sold out friends. After the death of his daughter, Art Linkletter said he would kill Leary on sight, which was quite a statement coming from him.

“This one is too complicated for me .... I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone ….”

I can’t tell if that’s good or bad. Maybe if you were a few years younger.

I can’t tell if that’s good or bad either, but your English, and the slant is toward Americans. In fact, I think Germaine Greer might be the only person isn’t American, and she’s from Australia.. My primary intention was to present some of the diverse voices of the era in all their passion. The Weathermen and feminist leaders especially were not pleasant people.

Re our ongoing "unpublished" conversation:

I said "white oak" but that didn't sound right. I think I meant "post oak."

I lived between Fort Worth ("Where the West begins") and Dallas ("Where the East peters out") -- only one of those slogans is real -- so we would see an occasional mesquite tree. A few miles west of us was all mesas and cactus and wide-open spaces, and a few miles of east of us was all black land and cotton fields. U.S. Hwy. 81 (now I-35) pretty much follows the Balcones Escarpment all the way down to Austin and beyond, with the "east" literally on one side of the road and the "west" on the other side in places.

I am glad you have renewed your friendship with Brent and Resurrection. As Jewish mothers like to say (usually about chicken noodle soup), it couldn't hurt.

Well then, your next post could be a "Best Of" list of Cheech and Chong quotes. :-) That would be fun.

I love Shel Silverstein. I read his books over and over as a child.
