His response to a friend was to the effect that he had wanted to separate from the synagogue for some but hadn't wanted to cause a scandal, and so being excommunicated meant that he had been cut free. As for why he didn't feel scandalized by the synagogue's behavior, I'm not sure. I am sure that none spoke of Spinoza as a man who was much swayed by other people's behavior.
